Komodo is nestled between the island of Sumbawa to the west and Flores to the east, spanning an area of 390 km².
Part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, the island is of volcanic origin, with its highest peak, Mount Satalibo (Gunung Satalibo), rising 735 meters above sea level.
Since 1980, Komodo and its neighboring islands—Rinca, Gili Damasi, Gili Motang, and Padar—have formed the Komodo National Park. Along with parts of Flores, this park serves as the sole natural habitat for the Komodo dragon. This unique species was the primary reason for the area’s designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Beyond its famous reptiles, the island is a premier destination for scuba divers. On November 11, 2011, Komodo was officially recognized as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature.
